General Syllabus
Yoga Barn Teacher Training

The Yoga Barn teacher training is an in-depth training in the viniyoga tradition with core
alignment principles from Iyengar yoga woven in as is appropriate. This training is registered
with the Yoga Alliance at the 500 hour level and is considered by AVI to be a fundamental training
for AVI's Yoga Therapist Training. Robin Rothenberg, Certified Yoga Therapist and primary
instructor for this training is herself an AVI graduate (1999, Therapist Training, 2002), and a
Certified Iyengar Teacher (1992). The Yoga Barn Advanced Studies Program or comparable program is a
pre-requisite to The Yoga Barn Teacher Training.
This training is designed not only to prepare one to teach all levels of asana, but to delve
deeply into the practices of pranayama, chanting, meditation, personal ritual and to cultivate a
deep appreciation for the philosophical basis for yoga, Patanjali's, Yoga Sutras. All student-teachers
are required to develop a personal practice incorporating the various tools of yoga. Robin will meet
with you privately to help cultivate your personal practice and to support you in the training
process. Mentors from the Yoga Barn staff may also be assigned to assist those in need additional support.
This is an intensive and intimate training, limited to 15, so that in traditional viniyoga
style, each student-teacher is encouraged to develop in the way most appropriate to him/her.
The Anatomy and Physiology portions will be taught by Dr. Jill Massengill, D.C., and Dr. Lynn Hughes,
D.O., psychiatrist. In addition to their vast experience in the medical field, both
of these women are seasoned teachers in the viniyoga lineage.
If you'd like more
information, you can contact Robin at The Yoga Barn: info@yogabarn.com or call 425.427.0038.

HOMEWORK: There will be sequences assigned each month for you to complete. These
are due, prior to the next month's meeting. There may be short essays assigned as well, pertaining to particular
sutras. There will be monthly assigned reading, and filling out of The Anatomy Coloring Book to prepare you for the
upcoming subject matter. In addition, by June I'd like each of you to hone in on a particular area of interest and
develop a mini series of classes around this subject (i.e.: chakras, yoga and nutrition, yoga
for women, yoga for the workplace…). I'd like you to design a minimum of 4 sequences (practices) on
the subject. Part of your graduation requirement will be to teach this course to a group of your choosing.
(I will help you refine your sequences prior to teaching), and receive evaluation feedback.
PRIVATES: A part of your training will include working privately with me on your own
personal practice. Three privates over the course of the year are included in the training fee.
OBSERVATION AND ASSISTING:
As part of your training you are required to observe a minimum of 12 classes. Four of these need to be a complete
Intro. Series. (Observation is key to your developing an 'eye' to read bodies, so the more, the better). By March,
I'd like you to choose an instructor at the studio that you feel you can build a relationship with and assist
them in a specific class on a regular basis. They can act as a mentor to you. If you have a particular interest in prenatal,
kid's yoga, vinyasa or therapeutics, this would be an opportunity for you to explore that area in a hands-on way.
REGULAR ASANA CLASSES:
There's an expectation that you will continue to take regular weekly yoga classes to further
cultivate your understanding of how to organize a class and to continue to develop your skills.
These classes may be taken with any teacher in the viniyoga tradition. (Eventually, once you
have an understanding of viniyoga sequencing, I think it is extremely valuable to also take
classes in other yoga traditions to broaden your scope and expose you to the larger world of yoga.)
FINAL:
You will be required to teach with your peers in a real class situation for review by Robin and other senior teachers.
(Will be scheduled at the end of 2009.)
Required Texts:
Yoga for Wellness, Yoga for Transformation, Heart of Yoga, Yoga for Body,
Breath and Mind; At least one translation of The Yoga Sutras - YB has multiple options); Living your Yoga,
Bringing Yoga to Life, Anatomy Coloring Book, Yoga Anatomy, and Prakriti. (The Yoga Barn has or can order these books,
if you do not already have them).
Suggested Materials:
Energy Anatomy Tapes by Caroline Myss, Energetic Boundaries by Karla McClaren,
Awakening Compassion by Pema Chodron (and all books by Pema Chodron)
In addition to the outlined course, there will be additional opportunities for you to
study anatomy, ayurveda, chanting, Sanskrit, prenatal yoga, yoga for kids, therapeutics or other
areas in more depth. I strongly encourage you to find your 'niche' in yoga and to pursue that more fully.
Fee for Teacher Training: $5,000
(Inclusive of all teacher's fees. Does not include room and board for retreat option)
Payment plans are available - ask for more information.
